Ongoing Concept • 2022 Capturing the essence of movement in a static form, the Helix Chair transforms the act of sitting into an experience of suspended animation. 1.0 // Approach &amp; Concept Inspired in part by the occasional lull in a billowing line of smoke coming from the late night burning of an incense stick, the project set off as an exploration into spatial expressions of ephemerality and tension. Twisting ribbons of vapor are translated into lines of flowing metal. The final form is one contained at the brink of motion, yet frozen gleamingly still. Concurrently designing for distributed manufacturing with an emphasis on employing standard material sections and sheets, the approach was heavily informed by explorations into how these stock Marine habitats and biodiversity are declining faster than at any other time in human history. These environments contain some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, yet they are subject to multiple stressors such as overexploitation of species and ocean warming. As global temperatures continue to warm, sea level will continue to rise causing a 'coastal squeeze' that would reduce the habitat of coastal marine life. These parameters help predict changes in the coastline overtime. Further information including the strength of ocean currents, length of intertidal zones and physicochemical ranges would provide the insight required to introduce interventions in prospective intertidal and subtidal zones. The variety of data gathered will allow for informed decisions regarding demographic distribution and control of individual species, as well as more holistically, the control of ecosystemic dynamics. An algorithm would further generate the configuration and composition of each unit, created from a range of functionally unique modules, specific to each site. Brightbox is a prototype of a new system of community infrastructure designed for areas such as refugee camps, ad-hoc and remote settlements and alongside disaster zones. Phase 1 is currently in use at the Bidibidi refugee settlement in North Uganda, with future phases planned for a number of international locations. I produced much of the Phase 1 press/media material, such as the axonometrics here, as well as potential proposals for a more flexible design in Phase 2. This is also reflected in the gradual change of rhythm and organicity of the building’s skin as the user journeys through the spaces.
